Since immigrating from Morocco to Canada in 1968, Sephardic Jew Solly Lévy has dedicated himself to forging bonds between immigrant communities, Jews, and Canadians in his adopted city of Montreal. As both a teacher and artist, Solly is a consummate entertainer.
On his newest album, Cantata Yamin Noraim, Solly performs traditional songs from Selihot, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur in the style, flavor, and ta’am of Tangier in northern Morocco. There, the cantorial tradition emphasized the importance of the essence of ancestral tradition in trasmitting honored songs and prayers.
